A Love Letter To Her

JRNL102 - Emotional History

INTRO: A male's first love is described as something he will never forget. For Dimitri it happened when he was 19, drawing us to imagine this unforgettable experience he compares his love to comparative everyday objects. Love being the feeling but home being the presence.

IN: "All good..." OUT: "Love is her" DURATION: 2:08

REFLECTION:

I interviewed my long term partner Dimitri Reid about his experiences with the emotion Love specifically about the way in which our relationship makes him feel. Dimitri had a rough upbringing and his perceptions on love are based off of the things in his life which are important to him. Dimitri's family holds a significant role in his life and without which his ideals on love would be drastically different to the way in which they are now.

Within the audio recording some technical issues we faced were the connecting adapter for the microphone to the headphone jack in my phone was missing from my recording pack (fyi. it was actually just tucked up and into a small pocket), this meant the time in which the interview took place was delayed.

Within the recording itself the audio may seem a-bit jagged or low in volume. I believe this is due to movement on his end when he held the microphone and the proximity in which he kept it towards his mouth. To avoid this problem from occurring in future audio assignments, to maintain consistency in volume and voice production I the conductor of the interview will hold the microphone approx. 5cm away from the interviewee's mouth.

Within the editing process I used Hindenburg to "kill my puppies" (B. Campbell.) to create emotion, mood, sense of person and place (Lecture notes, Week 2). In establishing these the story effect of the piece was established early on and allowed the linear effect on the ear to flow quite nicely.

There were many points throughout the planning of this assignment that I thought to myself about why I believe people should hear about this feeling. Whether it had something to do with my childhood dream of Heath Ledger coming down the bleachers singing “Can’t take my eyes off you” to confess his love to me; and to me this was one of the ways I could make that dream a reality. Having a boy confess to you in a vulnerable state the emotion he feels towards you. (“10 Things I Hate about You.” G. Junger 1999.)

The title “A Love Letter To Her” was the one aspect of the process I had set in stone from the beginning, it evokes a sense of security for me personally as I feel it would in the reader too. It establishes vulnerability, joy and love all within that one line, it completely sets the tone for the entire piece.

Through the use of Freesound and Youtube I found the sound of a typewriter heard throughout. This ties the title of the piece together with a physical item, to me a typewriter tells a story… others may see it as junk but I feel as though it certainly adds a sense of history to this everlasting feeling of a first love.
