During the process of recording and navigating my way through the A2 process I relied heavily on the Hindenburg User Guide to help splice and “kill me darlings''. This process allowed me to find and use room noise and silence to generate emotional connection. Approx 20 seconds into the recording the wimping of Patricia can be heard as well as the silence, this shows the true grief and emotional loss Patricia is still experiencing 6 months later. Through cross fading and shelving volumes I was able to generate an audio piece without the stopping and starting of different audio sections ensuring that the work flowed as if Patricia was non stop talking for a minute and a half. For the multimedia aspect of this piece, using the Golden Ratio allowed me to narrow down my photo options. Ensuring that all multimedia sources were distributed proportioned draw the audience to focus on the main details, in this case John Cains. In terms of practice and execution, this task challenged my emotional strengths as this topic was something very close to my heart. We sat down with my partner's grandmother and I said to her “Tell me about John, I want to know everything”... she talked for nearly 2 hours. This task pushed me during the editing process as I had to ensure I was listening the entire time so that I could capture the best parts. Despite the hour and 48 minute long original audio, the editing process was my favourite part. It allowed me to demonstrate my new found love of mixing audio and capturing the very best clips. To edit for the ear is to generate a conversational audio piece which transports you to the very room the audio was captured in. For Pat this piece was quite emotional and raw, to make her more comfortable it was much easier to do it in her home, surrounded by family over a baked dinner. We took lots of breaks, cried lots and ensured we checked in on each other, supporting and comforting as we went. Parkinson’s disease is a hidden challenge, John took it in his stride and never complained. Patricia Cains carries on his legacy with a smile and John's sense of humour.
